Tesla Driver Killed In Pond Crash Identified

He died when his Tesla Model S crashed into a pond on Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — The man who died when his Tesla Model S crashed into a pond on Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley has been identified as 34-year-old Keith Leung of Danville. The crash was discovered Sunday evening, according to the CHP, although the exact timing of the crash in not known at this point.

The Alameda County Sheriffs Office Dive Team was called in to retrieve the car and Leung's body, which were pulled from the water overnight. The vehicle was found about 65 feet from the edge of the pond, CHP spokesman Officer Dan Jacowitz said.

Crow Canyon Road was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to pull the wreckage from the water, but the road reopened at 5:45 Monday morning.

CHP investigators were at the scene to probe the cause of the crash. It has not been announced if the self-driving autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash. There have been multiple crashes recently involving Tesla vehicles in which the auto-pilot was engaged, including a deadly crash on Highway 101 in Mountain View in March.
