United CEO Apologizes Again, Promises Changes

VIDEO: Oscar Munoz called the April 9 passenger-dragging a "shameful incident" and said the airline is at a "turning point."

CHICAGO, IL — A day after settling a lawsuit with injured passenger Dr. David Dao for an undisclosed amount of money, United Airlines issued another video apology promising changes to come. In the message, CEO Oscar Munoz called the April 9 passenger-dragging a "shameful incident" and vowed to win back customers' trust. He apologized again but acknowledged "sorry simply doesn't go nearly far enough to address the shocking way one of our passengers was treated that day."

Munoz, who has said he will no longer chair the airline's board in 2018 as originally planned, called the incident a "turning point," vowing to follow his words with "meaningful actions."

Although United originally called Dao "aggressive" and called the actions of aviation police as "minimal but necessary force," a contrite Munoz again apologized for the airline's role and touted changes to come, such as offering passengers incentives of up to $10,000 for giving up their seats on overbooked flights, no longer removing passengers after boarding and discontinuing the use of law enforcement to remove passengers.

Munoz said the incident "happened because policies were placed ahead of our shared values, and procedures got in the way of what we know is right ... This is just the beginning of how we earn back your trust."
