GENEVA, IL — A hostage situation at Delnor Hospital in Geneva ended Saturday evening when the inmate who took a hospital employee hostage after taking the gun from the corrections officer guarding him was shot dead by a SWAT officer, officials said at a press conference.

Kane County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Patrick Gengler told reporters that the incident had been resolved. The hospital will begin taking walk-ins needing emergency care at 6 p.m. and ambulance service will resume at 8 p.m. Gengler said crisis negotiators were engaged in negotiations with the inmate but at some point those negotiations broke down and authorities forced entry into the room where the employee was being held hostage.

The deceased inmate was identified as 21-year-old Tywon Salters, of Chicago. Gengler said Salters had been in custody at the Kane County jail since April 11, however jail records show he has been in custody since March 11. Salters was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and was given a bail amount of $75,000.
