The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, in the 4600 block of West Maypole Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. According to police, Eaton opened fire on a plaincothes officer who was in the area on a "narcotics mission" with his partner and approached Eaton and a man acting suspicious. The officer, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was hit in the chest, but he and his partner were able to return fire, shooting her multiple times in the upper body, police said.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson and Dr. Kristen Donaldson, an emergency medicine physician at Loyola University Medical Center who treated the wounded officer, both said the vest the cop was wearing saved his life.

"Thank goodness his bulletproof vest stopped the round," Johnson said during a Friday briefing on the shooting at Loyola University Medical Center.

Eaton was taken Friday to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. She was still in the hospital Monday and did not attend her hearing, the Tribune reports. Before the shooting, an arrest warrant for Eaton had been issued Thursday for failing to appear concerning a charge of aggravated assault of a police officer, the report stated. In that case, she is accused of injuring an officer in an incident in February, the report added. Eaton also sentenced to two years probation in 2014 stemming a heroin possession case, according to the Tribune.
