Teen Girl Pulled From Lake Michigan Dies At Hospital 'Despite The Best Efforts'

UPDATED: The girl, who had been swimming in the lake near Rogers Park on Tuesday, was pulled from the water by fire department divers.

CHICAGO, IL — A teenage girl who been swimming in Lake Michigan was pulled from the water Tuesday after she went under, but she later died at the hospital, according to reports. Chicago Fire Department divers began searching the lake for her just before 10:30 a.m. in the waters near 7600 North Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, the department said.

According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the girl — who was said to be either 12 or 13 years old — had been swimming off a small, rocky beach in the area when she started experiencing trouble. Other people tried to help and rescue her, but she eventually went under, the report stated. Fire department divers pulled the girl from the water at about 10:45 a.m., the report added.

Emergency workers gave the girl CPR once on dry land, and she was taken to Evanston's Presence Saint Francis Hospital in critical condition, according to the fire department. The girl later died at the hospital, the department said in an online statement just before 1:15 p.m.

"Sad news. Despite the best efforts the little girl pulled from the lake has passed away …," the Twitter update stated.

Chicago beaches don't officially open and aren't staffed with lifeguards until May 26, and it's unknown if the girl was at an official beach, ABC 7 reports.
