Crown Point Mayor Wants Apology From 'Chicago PD'

The mayor of the Indiana town wants the makers of the NBC show to apologize for portraying it as racist.

CROWN POINT, IN — Residents of Crown Point, Indiana were taken aback last week when the NBC drama "Chicago P.D." aired an episode that portrays the city as racist, and the mayor has now asked for an apology from the show.

In the May 10 episode, "Army of One," police investigate a murder of a black man who had been jailed for rape. One character tells cops the man had been imprisoned as a result of consensual sex with his white girlfriend and implies the town is intolerant of interracial couples.

After the show aired, many upset residents contacted Crown Point Mayor David Uran, who responded by asking for an apology from the network and the series' producers, the Post-Tribune reports.

Uran said it was misleading to set the episode's fictional storyline in an actual location. He said the reality of Crown Point is nothing like what was depicted in the show, which included scenes set in a trailer park and dive bar.

"It is not the way they portrayed the city. All they had to do is change the name," he told the Post-Tribune.

Crown Point's police chaplain told the paper the episode was "heavy-handed and condescending" and suggested its writers were lazy, while the president of the local convention and tourism bureau invited the makers of "Chicago P.D." to come to downtown Crown Point and apologize in person (where they can see how lovely the city is in reality.)

NBC Universal's publicist for the show did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
