Teen Hit by Stray Bullet

The 16-year-old boy was a passenger in his family's vehicle, when he was hit by a stray gunshot.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the back with a stray bullet at 12:58 a.m. Thursday, while riding in his family's vehicle.

Sarasota Police say that as the vehicle was through Pershing Avenue and Dr. MLK Jr. Boulevard, the vehicle was hit twice by stray bullets, according to the Sarasota Police.

One bullet lodged in the vehicle and the other bullet went through the trunk and the back seat, striking the young man’s back.

He was treated at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for a minor injury and released hours later.    

At the same time, officers said that they made contact with a man who claims that he was in the same area and that he was shot at numerous times by an unknown assailant.

The victim ran from the area, dodging bullets and ended up at a family member’s home. The victim then left the area by vehicle, flagging down a Sarasota Sheriff’s Office deputy. This victim was not injured.

At this time, the shooter has not been identified. The shooting is being actively investigated by Sarasota Police Detectives.
