Summer Service Program To Help Lafayette Nonprofit

Students in the program will earn 55 volunteer hours for college. Nonprofits in Walnut Creek, Lafayette and Pleasant Hill will be helped.

LAMORINDA, CA — HandsOn Tomorrow, a service-learning summer program for Bay Area teenagers, will hold a two week session based in Walnut Creek in July. Participants, including Lamorinda teens, will be challenged to be the change they wish to see in the world and organize together to become community leaders in the Bay Area and beyond.

Over the course of two weeks, students will visit five nonprofits with diverse mission statements and deliver immediate impact through unique and engaging volunteer projects. The HandsOn Tomorrow curriculum leads participants to reflect on issues facing the community and develop the leadership skills necessary to effectively support local nonprofits and causes.

The two week session will include 2 days each at the following:

  • Cooking with Kids, Community Garden in Walnut Creek
  • Diablo Foothills Regional Park in Walnut Creek
  • Futures Explored in Lafayette
  • St. Vincent de Paul in Pleasant Hill
  • Choice in Aging in Pleasant Hill

A large-scale volunteer service project planned and led by the team will be the culmination of the program.

The sessions take place Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the final service project taking place on the final Saturday, typically 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to the program, HandsOn Tomorrow participants will:

  • Earn 55 volunteer hours for college
  • Become strong and effective leaders
  • Learn what it takes to make a difference in their community
  • Engage their peers, family, and community members through volunteer action
  • Learn how to work and thrive in a team-based environment
