Staying In? Play These New Classic Games With The Whole Family
Social distancing is a lot more fun with Exploding Kittens, Kids Against Maturity and Codenames.
There's no denying that the new coronavirus has changed what home life looks like for most of us. Many parents are working from home, the kids are out of school, and social distancing is the smart, responsible thing to do. (For the latest safety recommendations, make sure to check out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website.)
You might be going a little stir crazy — or maybe you find you can't look away from the news. If that's the case, a good old-fashioned family game night might just be the distraction you need.
You probably already have old-school classics such as Monopoly, Trouble and Clue, and these games are all great. What you might not know, though, is that there's a newer fleet of family games that are just as fun for parents as they are for kids. We’ve rounded the best of these soon-to-be classic games right here.

Kids Against Maturity
For kids who are bored with the simplicity of Apples 2 Apples but not yet ready for the mature content in Cards Against Humanity, Kids Against Maturity is the perfect middle ground. This easy-to-play card game is filled with age-appropriate toilet humor and funny innuendos that only the adults will catch. If you can't take a joke or don't appreciate flatulence humor, this game might not be for you. But if you have a sense of humor and want to laugh right along with your children, Kids Against Maturity is the ultimate game night win. Recommended for kids ages 8 and up.
Ms. Monopoly Board Game
Classic Monopoly is fun, but Ms. Monopoly takes game night to a whole new level. This breakout board game introduces a new player to the Monopoly family and celebrates female entrepreneurs and inventors. Instead of buying properties, players buy inventions made by innovative women throughout history. Players can build business headquarters to collect even more rent and purchase utilities — such as solar heating — that were invented by women. Ms. Monopoly is recommended for ages eight and up.
Exploding Kittens Card Game
This addictive, easy-to-play family card game is well on its way to classic status with kids and grownups. There are kittens, explosions, laser beams and sometimes goats — and winning requires a little luck and a lot of strategy. Exploding Kittens can be played by two to five players and is recommended for kids ages 7 and up.
Sequence Game by Jax
While not exactly a newbie on the game scene, Sequence has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. This exciting game of strategy is simple enough for young children to play but challenging enough to make things fun for adults. Each player takes turns playing a card for their hand and placing a chip on a corresponding space on the game board. When you have five chips in a row, it's a Sequence. You learn how to block your opponents or remove their chips, and you better watch out for the jacks — they're wild! Winning is part strategy and part luck, so don't be surprised when things get competitive! Sequence can be played by two players all the way up to 12 players, and it's recommended for kids ages 7 and up.

Poop: The Game
If you're not opposed to toilet humor, Poop is the silly card game for you. The first player to run out of Poop cards wins, but you have to be careful not to clog the toilet! Some cards require players to do crazy things, like make fart sounds or grunt before they can play a card. It's delightfully immature fun that's recommended for kids ages 6 and up.
Codenames
For teens and grownups looking for a game to play together, you really can't beat Codenames. In this strategic, deceptively challenging game: Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents, their teammates know these agents only by their codenames, and the two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. The spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the table, and their teammates try to guess words of their team's color while avoiding the words that belong to the opposing team. Win or lose, Codenames is engaging, fast-paced fun for everyone.
Not Parent Approved: A Card Game for Kids, Families and Mischief Makers
This "inappropriately appropriate" card game, inspired by Cards Against Humanity, will have the whole family in giggles. The game starts with a burp-off (real or fake) to determine who gets to be the Burp Boss. From there, the other players create the weirdest and funniest question and answer combinations. Recommended for ages seven and up, Not Parent Approved is ideal for family game nights, sleepovers, camping adventures and beyond.
Spin Master Games - Beat The Parents
Kids go head-to-head against parents in this fun-filled family trivia game. The adults have to answer questions about kids' stuff, and the kids answer questions about things their parents should really know. It's a fun way to test your knowledge and bond with your little ones. Beat The Parents is recommended for kids ages 6 and up.
