Lamorinda, Contra Costa Coronavirus Cases

Contra Costa County reported 166 new cases Monday, almost six times the number of new cases 2 weeks ago. Also on Monday: 2 new deaths.

LAMORINDA, CA — The same day that Contra Costa County health officials announced a pause in loosening coronavirus shelter-in-place restrictions, 166 new cases were announced, compared to just 28 new cases two weeks ago. The nearly six fold increase in cases has alarmed the county, residents, and Sacramento health officials.

There are now 38 people hospitalized with coronavirus in Contra Costa County, compared to 23 two weeks ago. Across the Bay Area, there are 340 people currently in the hospital with COVID-19 complications.

Here in Lamorinda, the number of coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic has reached 34 in Lafayette, 13 in Moraga, and 56 in Orinda, for a total of 103. That number has not increased significantly from three weeks ago, when the total was 93. In nearby Walnut Creek, the number of cases has essentially doubled in the same three week period.

On Wednesday, the county had planned to allow indoor dining, gyms and fitness centers, indoor museums, hotels and other leisure venues to reopen. Now, the county says they will remain closed until the county's outbreak stabilizes.

Contra Costa County is not alone in seeing a spike in cases and hospitalizations. Gov. Gavin Newsom said during a news conference on Monday that the state is monitoring outbreaks, has already ordered some restrictions, and may impose more in the near future.

Statewide, California is approaching 6,000 deaths, with the official tally now 5,935. After the two new deaths in Contra Costa County reported on Monday, the death toll here stands at 76.

Worldwide, there have been more than a half million deaths attributed to coronavirus, with almost 126,000 of those deaths in the United States.
