PROVIDENCE, RI — Johnson and Wales University is shifting to fully remote learning at its Providence campus after more than three dozen students tested positive for the coronavirus in the past week, the university announced Monday. All students, both on- and off-campus, are being urged to get tested this week.

All Providence campus classes will move online starting Monday except culinary, baking and pastry labs. A spokesperson for the university told Patch that remote learning "will be in place for this week, at a minimum."

The school is working with the Rhode Island Department of Health to handle the outbreak and prevent further transmission, the statement said. Last week, 38 off-campus students were confirmed to have the coronavirus. Testing for students who live on campus, in apartments nearby or who commute will begin Wednesday for both Rhode Island campuses. Students will be asked to stay at home, in their dorm or in their off-campus residence until testing is complete, to help keep the virus from spreading.

"The measures we are taking will help our campus community as well as those who live in the neighborhoods where our students reside," Providence campus President Marie Bernardo-Sousa said. "Let's continue doing what needs to be done, so we can finish the fall semester on track while keeping each other safe and healthy."
