PHOENIX — Primary elections were underway Tuesday in Arizona, where voters were casting ballots for Senate, governor, secretary of state, and attorney general in key races that feature high-profile election deniers.

The Senate primary election features seven Republicans vying to take on incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in the general election. Former President Donald Trump endorsed political newcomer Blake Masters, a tech executive, in the race. But Mark Brnovich, the state’s attorney general, could benefit from a slew of ads attacking Masters in the race from solar power executive Jim Lamon.

Two of the four GOP candidates maintain the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and plan to push major changes if they win the primary and the November general election, according to The Associated Press.

In the race for governor, nine Republicans and three Democrats are vying to succeed outgoing Gov. Doug Ducey. On the GOP side, Ducey's certification of Joe Biden's win in the 2020 election has been front and center.

Former news anchor Kari Lake, Trump’s choice for Arizona governor, has peddled false election claims while her primary opponent Karrin Taylor Robson — former Vice President Mike Pence — campaigned on conservative themes, but not on election denial, according to The New York Times.

In the race for secretary of state, Rep. Shawnna Bolick has backed election denial claims, as has state Rep. Mark Finchem, Trump's pick in the race.

Bolick introduced a bill last year that would allow a simple majority of the Legislature to overturn presidential election results.

Finchem attended Trump's Jan. 6, 2021, rally that led to the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Finchem sought this year to get the GOP-controlled Legislature to notify Congress that Arizona wanted to decertify Biden's win.

State Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita, who acknowledges Biden's victory but has worked years to tighten election laws, and businessman Beau Lane, who is backed by GOP Gov. Doug Ducey, are also running for secretary of state.

On the Democratic side of the race, House Minority Leader Reginald Bolding and former Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes seek their party's nomination for secretary of state.

In the attorney general race, six Republicans are squaring off to take on Democrat Kris Mayes.
