LAKE COUNTY, IL — A Lake County teen is among three Indiana State University football players killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in Indiana.
Christian Eubanks, a former football player at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, was a freshman at Indiana State and a linebacker on the football team, according to a statement from Indiana State University.
His teammates, Jayden Musili, 19, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Caleb Vanhooser, 19, of Liberty Township, Ohio, were also killed in the collision, which happened at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on State Road 46 at Main Street in Riley, according to Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse. The students’ vehicle left the road and hit a tree, and was on fire when deputies arrived, according to Plasse, who said the two people who survived were seriously injured.
The driver and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, Plasse said. Two other ISU football players, Omarion Dixon and John Moore, were seriously injured in the crash.
"There are no words to express the depth of our sadness about this tragedy," said Indiana State University President Deborah J. Curtis. "We send our condolences to the family and friends of the students involved. The Sycamore family is mourning and will support each other in this time of grief."
The football team did not practice Monday. ISU student-athletes gathered Sunday night at Memorial Stadium to mourn the tragedy, according to a statement form ISU.
"My heart is broken at the loss of these three souls," said Sherard Clinkscales, director of athletics. "Life is so precious, and it is very difficult to comprehend when tragic events like this happen. They will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go to each of their families."
Eubanks, 18, of Waukegan, was majoring in business administration.
