LAMORINDA, CA — With gas prices surging again, Lamorinda riders may be pleased to know that all County Connection buses are operating free of charge through the month of October.

The bus service is offering free rides to all passengers of buses and paratransit traveling any route. It is using federal stimulus money in an effort to help essential workers save money and to increase ridership. The service said that its ridership fell 71 percent from 300,000 average monthly passengers in fall 2019 to fewer than 100,000 passengers in fall 2020. Two years later, average monthly ridership is in the middle, roughly 200,000 passengers.

If ridership increases, the bus service will be able to increase its service frequency. Numerous studies have shown that increased public transit helps reduce congestion and air pollution.
