Tornado Confirmed from Wednesday's Storms / More Storms in Forecast This Weekend for Chicago Area

A look at storm reports from Wednesday and a look ahead to what the weather forecast will be for the coming days for the Chicago area.

Rain, thunderstorms and cooler temps are in the forecast for the Chicago area this weekend. Storms Thursday night are expected to hit south of Chicago area but the stormy weather is expected to return to the area on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will be much cooler Friday behind a cold front but should be back up in the 70s and may hit 80s on Saturday.

The storms come after a powerful storm system hit the Chicago area on Wednesday night. The National Weather Service confirmed on Thursday that a tornado touched down in Boone and McHenry counties. The EF-1 tornado, with estimated peak wind speeds of 95 mph, touched down two miles south of Poplar Grove and dissipated about three miles northwest of Harvard, according to the National Weather Service. It was on the ground from about 10:21 to 10:34 p.m.

There was also reports of golfball-sized hail and damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms on Saturday, which are expected to be widespread across the Chicago area, could bring heavy downpours, according to WGN News. There is also a chance for heavy rain on Friday.

Sunday is expected to be dryer with highs in the 60s and 70s.

Here is a more detailed look at the weather forecast for the Chicago area for the coming days:

  • THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 40s. North winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • FRIDAY: Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers. Highs in the mid 50s. Northeast winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
  • FRIDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of showers in the evening, then a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms after midnight. Lows in the lower 50s. East winds 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent.
  • SATURDAY: Showers likely and a chance of thunderstorms. Highs in the lower 70s inland...but only in the upper 60s near the lake. Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
  • SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely and a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, then a chance of showers after midnight. Lows in the upper 50s. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
  • SUNDAY: Partly sunny. A 20 percent chance of showers in the morning. Highs in the mid 60s.
  • SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy in the evening then clearing. Lows in the upper 40s.
  • MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 70s.
